I have a client with a decent Wix website, but the design and overall quality are fairly basic. I don't have enough time to redesign the whole thing, so I'm wondering whether a Wix site can be exported for editing with other tools and then imported back into Wix afterward. If that isn't possible, what are the practical options for moving it to another platform or hosting provider? Also, what are the main reasons someone would choose Wix instead of building a site with separate hosting and a domain? Is the main advantage that it's quick and accessible for people without technical experience?

Wix generally doesn’t provide a clean export-and-reimport workflow. The site is built around Wix’s proprietary editor and hosting, so moving it usually means recreating the design and content on another platform rather than downloading the whole project and editing it elsewhere. An automated converter would also struggle with the builder-specific layout, settings, forms, and responsive behavior.
Wix’s main appeal is convenience. Someone without much technical knowledge can choose a template, edit text and images, connect a domain, and publish a reasonably polished site without hiring a developer or managing hosting, updates, and security. The tradeoff is less control and more difficulty when you eventually want to move elsewhere. A domain itself isn’t an alternative to Wix—it’s just the web address. You still need hosting or another service to run the website.
The realistic alternative is to migrate the content away from Wix and rebuild the site on a platform you control, such as a conventional CMS or a custom site with separate hosting. That gives you more flexibility, but the cost depends on the number of pages, forms, integrations, SEO requirements, and how closely the existing design needs to be matched. For a small client project, it can easily become more work than the client expects.
