I'm planning to reinstall my RX 7700 XT alongside my RX 9070 XT so I can use the extra VRAM. Both graphics cards use two 6+2-pin power connectors, and the 7700 XT would run in a PCIe x4 slot. PCPartPicker estimates the system at roughly 850W, so I'm considering a 1200W power supply for additional headroom. Would a good 1000W unit be genuinely sufficient, or is there any unusual power requirement I might be overlooking? The rest of the system is a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, 64GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory, and a B650M Aorus Elite AX ICE motherboard. I'm mainly interested in a reliable, high-quality PSU recommendation for this setup.

There’s no problem with using an oversized PSU, especially if the price difference is reasonable. A quality 1000W model should probably handle this build, but 1200W gives you more transient-spike headroom and leaves room for future upgrades. I’d prioritize a reputable unit with the right PCIe power connectors and a strong warranty over chasing the highest wattage alone.
The dual-GPU setup is the main thing to verify, not the PCIe x4 slot itself. Make sure the motherboard has enough physical clearance and that both cards can receive power from separate PSU cables where possible. Based on an estimated draw around 850W, a good 1000W PSU should be adequate, while 1200W is a sensible choice if you want more margin for spikes and future changes.

The extra VRAM is mainly for Space Engineers 2, which can be pretty demanding. That’s why I’m trying to run both cards instead of replacing the 7700 XT outright.
