The Chromebook box lists lower specs than the model I ordered—should I open it or return it?

I ordered a new Lenovo Chromebook Plus 2-in-1 with an Intel N355 processor, 14-inch WUXGA IPS touchscreen, 8GB of RAM, and 256GB of UFS storage. When it arrived, I checked the packaging and found a UPS Freight Collect sticker covering part of the original label. Underneath, the box appeared to list 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage instead. The seller has a strict return policy for opened items, so I have not opened the package yet. Could the box simply be mislabeled, or should I return it without taking the risk?

I would return it, especially since it was advertised and purchased as new. The packaging is already showing specifications that do not match the listing, so there is no good reason to gamble with the seller’s return policy. For future purchases, choosing a listing fulfilled directly by the retailer may reduce this kind of risk.

A box label can occasionally be wrong, and some resellers do upgrade lower-spec machines, but you should not have to prove that after receiving an item with mismatched specifications. Document the label and the listing, then contact the retailer and request a return or replacement before opening it. If you do open it, an advertised-not-as-described item should generally still qualify for a refund, but the seller’s policy could make the process more difficult.

The most likely explanations are either that the seller shipped the wrong model or altered a lower-spec unit, not that the manufacturer intentionally packed a different Chromebook in a correctly labeled box. Since the purchase was supposed to be new and the label says 4GB/128GB, returning it unopened is the safest option.
