I lost my iPhone 14 in a lake last week after using it for about 3.5 years. It was my first smartphone, and I'm not very familiar with Apple's backup system. I bought another iPhone 14 and signed in with my Apple Account, but it says no iCloud backup is available. When I checked iCloud online, I found only one file and no photos. I'm fairly sure I used the correct email because the file is from a holiday that happened while I owned the phone, but I also have an older email account that I can't currently access and may have used for backups. It's locked for another 30 days. Does the missing iCloud backup mean none of my photos were ever saved? Are there any other recovery options, such as an old computer backup, or are the photos probably gone?

If the photos weren’t synced to iCloud and you never made a backup to a Mac or PC, there usually isn’t a way to recover them from a phone that was lost in the lake. Device backups only help if one was actually created, and iCloud backups can also fail if the phone was out of storage, disconnected from Wi-Fi, or the feature was turned off. Check any old computers, external drives, or photo services you might have used before giving up completely.
This is unfortunately a painful reminder that important photos need more than one copy. Going forward, enable automatic photo syncing and device backups, and keep a second copy on a computer or external drive. If the missing pictures are irreplaceable, it may still be worth checking with a reputable data-recovery service, although a phone that has been underwater for a week may have little recoverable storage and the cost can be high.
First, double-check every Apple Account email address you may have used. If the older account is still being recovered, there’s a chance your photos or backup are associated with that account rather than the one you checked. Also make sure you’re looking under iCloud Photos, not just the device-backup section. If nothing appears after checking the accounts, iCloud doesn’t have a copy to restore.
I found one file from a holiday during the time I owned the phone, so I think the current email is probably correct. I’m waiting for access to the older account in case I used it as a backup.
