My son is heading off to college and his GeForce RTX 3060 12GB is starting to fail. His system has a Ryzen 7 9700X and 32GB of RAM, and he'll be playing current games as part of his school's esports team. I can't afford a flagship card, but I'd like to replace the 3060 with something noticeably faster. What GPUs offer the best value right now, either new or used?

The RX 9060 XT 16GB is a good value-focused choice. If you can find one at a good price, an RX 7700 XT would also provide a noticeable step up from the 3060.
For a new card, look at whatever current-generation model is on sale. A 16GB RTX 5060 Ti would be a straightforward upgrade, but prices can be high. The RX 9060 XT 16GB is worth considering at a lower price, and an RX 9070 GRE can also be a strong option if you find one around the $500 range.
Depending on the budget, consider an RX 9070 GRE new, an RX 7700 XT, or a used RX 6800 or 6800 XT. The used 6800-series cards can offer excellent performance, especially if the price is substantially below newer models.
A used RTX 3080 could be a solid upgrade, but check the power supply first. It uses considerably more power than a 3060, so the PSU’s wattage, connectors, and overall quality need to be sufficient.
