I found a used GTX 1660 Super and an RX 5700 selling for almost the same price, with only about a $5 difference in my area. That seems unusual because the RX 5700 appears to be the more powerful card. Is there a reason people avoid it, or is it simply a better deal than the 1660 Super?

This is a much closer comparison to an RTX 2060 Super than to a GTX 1660 Super. The similar pricing may mostly come from brand preference and NVIDIA’s feature reputation, not because the RX 5700 is weaker. As long as the specific used card is in good condition, I’d choose the RX 5700.
The RX 5700 is the clear winner here. It has noticeably more raw performance and 8GB of VRAM compared with the 1660 Super’s 6GB, so it will generally handle higher settings and newer games better.
The RX 5700 is still capable at 1080p, but remember that both cards are older and lack hardware ray tracing. Newer GPUs such as an RX 6600 or RTX 3060 would offer a better long-term feature set if you can increase your budget. Between these two, though, the RX 5700 is the better value.
