I'm considering switching to Linux, but Microsoft OneNote is the main thing holding me back. I rely on it for nearly everything and haven't found an alternative I like. Has anyone managed to run the desktop version with cloud synchronization through Wine or another compatibility layer, or is the web version currently the only practical option?

The most straightforward option is the web version, installed as a progressive web app so it behaves somewhat like a standalone application. It supports the basics, but it may not feel as complete as the Windows desktop client.

That’s the problem I’m running into—the web version feels noticeably worse, so I’m hoping there’s a way to get the full client working.

I haven’t found a reliable way to run the current OneNote desktop application with full cloud syncing through Wine. Compatibility can vary by release, but it doesn’t seem like a dependable setup for something you use as your primary note-taking tool.

I was hoping someone had tested it recently, but it sounds like the compatibility situation may still be limited.

It might help to identify which OneNote features you depend on most—handwritten notes, audio, document attachments, collaboration, or something else. Some alternatives cover individual features well, but finding one that matches the complete OneNote experience can be difficult.
