Will a Nintendo-style controller work normally on a PC?

I found an inexpensive wired controller with a layout and shape similar to an Xbox controller, but it's made for Nintendo systems. I've never used Nintendo controllers before, so I'm unsure whether Windows will recognize it and whether PC games will treat it like a standard gamepad. Is there anything specific I should check before buying it?

Steam can often help with Switch and other controller types through its controller configuration. It may translate the inputs for games launched through Steam, but that doesn’t guarantee every game will recognize it automatically.

If you only need a controller for PC, an explicitly XInput-compatible model is the safer purchase. A Nintendo-compatible controller may technically connect but still fail to work in many games unless you use remapping software. A well-supported third-party brand such as 8BitDo is generally a better bet.

It depends on the exact controller. Many Nintendo or Nintendo-style controllers work over USB, but PC compatibility varies. Check whether the product specifically supports Windows and, ideally, XInput mode. XInput is what most PC games expect, so it usually gives the smoothest experience.

Switch Pro controllers can work on PC over USB or Bluetooth, and some people use them successfully for games. However, button labels and layouts can be different, and support outside Steam may require extra configuration.
