I'm wondering how long this PC should remain capable for gaming and basic music production. The current build has an MSI B660M-A WiFi DDR4 motherboard, 16GB of RAM, a Gigabyte RTX 3080, an Intel Core i3-14100F, three 500GB SSDs, and a 1TB hard drive. I'm considering upgrading to a 14th-generation i7, but I'm unsure whether the improvement would justify the cost with the rest of the system unchanged. Would an i7 provide a major improvement over the i3 for gaming or basic music production?

The right question is whether the PC can do what you need today. If your games run well and your music projects aren’t hitting CPU or memory limits, there’s no urgent reason to upgrade. It will last longer if you’re comfortable reducing graphics settings instead of expecting maximum settings indefinitely.
There isn’t really such a thing as a future-proof PC. It stays useful for as long as it performs well enough for what you want to do. With an RTX 3080, this system should still be perfectly capable for gaming for several more years, especially if you’re willing to lower settings over time.
If you find a compatible i7 at a good price, it can extend the system’s useful life, but don’t buy one just because it sounds more future-proof. Check that the motherboard BIOS supports the 14th-generation processor, and compare the total cost against a newer platform before spending much on an older socket.
The i7 upgrade probably won’t be a huge gaming improvement unless your current i3 is limiting performance, such as in CPU-heavy games or when targeting very high frame rates. For basic music production, the extra cores could help with larger projects and more plugins, but 32GB of RAM may be a more generally useful upgrade than moving straight to an i7.
