How much would an X3D processor improve FPS in an extremely CPU-bound game?

I currently play ARK: Survival Ascended in a huge base with tens of thousands of structures visible at once. Performance averages around 20–30 FPS depending on my location, and it can drop below 10 FPS, while my RTX 5080 stays around 20–25% utilization. My system has a Ryzen 9 7900X, MSI PRO B650-VC motherboard, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and a WD SN8100 SSD. All graphics settings are already very low, with configuration tweaks that remove or reduce effects such as fog, clouds, grass, weather, water, and textures. Memory is running with EXPO at 6000 MT/s. How much improvement could I realistically expect by upgrading from the 7900X to a processor such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D? Some players using CPUs like the 7600X3D claim significantly higher FPS with similar hardware. Can the extra 3D V-Cache make a dramatic difference in an unusually CPU-limited late-game scenario, or should I investigate another issue first?

Since the settings are already extremely reduced and EXPO is enabled, testing the CPU at stock settings versus a mild, stable tuning could help confirm the diagnosis. If raising CPU performance noticeably improves FPS, a faster gaming CPU is likely to help. If it barely changes anything, the limitation may be an engine or simulation bottleneck that even an X3D upgrade cannot fully solve. Use a repeatable benchmark location and measure frame times rather than relying only on overall CPU utilization.

Low total CPU usage can be misleading because one game thread may be saturated while the other cores are mostly idle. Per-core monitoring and frame-time graphs are more useful than the overall CPU percentage.

X3D processors are specifically designed to help CPU-limited games by keeping more game data close to the cores. However, the improvement varies heavily by engine and workload. They can substantially improve averages and frame-time consistency in some games, not just the 1% lows, but a guaranteed two- or three-fold increase would be unusual. A 9800X3D could help, but the exact result depends on how ARK handles the enormous number of structures and simulation tasks in your base.

That is the concern: typical benchmarks may not represent a late-game save with tens of thousands of structures. Reviews showing small gains in normal scenes cannot rule out larger gains in an extreme CPU-limited situation, but they also cannot guarantee them.

Before buying a CPU, confirm that the game is actually limited by the main game thread. GPU utilization being only 20–25% strongly suggests a CPU or engine bottleneck, but it does not identify the exact cause. Check per-core usage, effective clock speeds, temperatures, background programs, BIOS settings, and whether the game is using the expected cores. Comparing the same location, camera direction, save, and settings with other players is important because their bases, mods, server conditions, and configuration files may differ.

The 7900X is a strong general-purpose CPU, but its gaming performance is generally below the newer X3D models. A 7800X3D, 9800X3D, or another current X3D chip would usually be a better choice for a gaming-focused build, especially when paired with a high-end GPU. Among those options, the 9800X3D is the most straightforward upgrade if the price is reasonable; the extra cores on a 7900X3D or 7950X3D are not automatically useful for games.
