This is a Dell office laptop that my mom needs to return for work tomorrow. I've been using it for the past few weeks and only removed a few apps I downloaded. While trying to transfer photos over USB, I accidentally tried inserting the connector into the HDMI port. It didn't fit, but the screen suddenly went black afterward. I've held the power button down for 30–60 seconds and tried charging it, but it still won't power on. What should I try next?

First, disconnect everything from the laptop, plug the charger directly into a known-working outlet, and leave it charging for a while. Then try holding the power button for about 30 seconds before reconnecting the charger and turning it on. If the charging light, keyboard lights, or fan show any activity, try connecting an external monitor to determine whether the problem is limited to the laptop’s display. On many Dell laptops, tapping F12 repeatedly immediately after pressing the power button can open the diagnostics menu.
Accidentally touching the HDMI port with a USB plug usually shouldn’t cause this unless it was forced or something was bent. Since the machine has no signs of power even after charging, check the charger, charging-port light, and outlet first. If another compatible Dell charger is available, testing with it would help. If there is still no response, it may be a hardware or power-circuit failure and should be taken to the company’s IT department rather than opened or repaired further before it is returned.
I tried charging it and turning it on, but there are still no lights, fan noise, or display. I also couldn’t get anything to appear on an external monitor.
