I have an HP ENVY x360 Convertible 13-ag0000 with a Ryzen 5 2500U. The built-in microSD slot does not detect my card at all, and nothing appears in Disk Management. The card works when connected through my phone, so the card itself seems functional. I've already checked for driver updates. I also tried a second microSD card with the same result. What else can I troubleshoot before buying an external USB card reader?

Formatting to exFAT would only help if the card is detected but unreadable. Since the laptop does not detect it at all, formatting is unlikely to fix this. An inexpensive USB card reader is a useful test: if that works, the built-in reader is the problem. If ordinary USB devices also fail, troubleshoot the laptop’s USB drivers or hardware separately.
Since two different cards fail in the laptop but work elsewhere, the issue is probably with the reader rather than the cards. Check Device Manager for a card reader or storage controller with a warning icon, enable it if disabled, and install the card-reader and chipset drivers from HP’s support page for the exact laptop model. It’s also worth checking whether the reader is enabled in the BIOS.
Make sure the card is fully inserted until it clicks and that the contacts and slot are clean. You can carefully clean the card contacts with isopropyl alcohol and let them dry completely. If the reader still does not appear in Disk Management or Device Manager with multiple known-good cards, the internal reader may be damaged or disconnected.
The fact that the card can be accessed through the phone confirms the card is probably fine. I’d test with an external reader before opening the laptop, since it will quickly show whether the internal slot is faulty.
