I'm looking for advice on choosing a better 27-inch 1440p monitor to use as my main display. My current ASUS ROG Strix XG27ACS is a 180Hz Fast IPS monitor that I'm happy with, so I plan to move it into a vertical secondary-monitor position rather than replace it.
My system has a Radeon RX 7900 GRE, Ryzen 5 7600X, 32GB of DDR5-6000 memory, and Windows 11. I mainly play AAA games at 1440p, often with FSR or another upscaling method, along with some competitive and lighter games. I don't consistently reach very high frame rates in demanding games, so 240–280Hz seems more useful to me than 360Hz.
My usage is approximately 70% gaming and 30% general desktop work, including browsing, Discord, videos, Windows, Office, and Adobe software. I don't spend every day doing eight to ten hours of professional office work, but the monitor will still display static elements such as browser windows, taskbars, and application interfaces.
I'm considering a 27-inch 1440p 240–280Hz OLED such as the ASUS ROG Strix XG27AQWMG, a high-end 240–320Hz IPS monitor, or a 27-inch 1440p Mini-LED IPS model if I can find one at a reasonable price in Europe. My budget is roughly €300–€550, and I can also buy from Spain if pricing is better.
OLED is tempting because it would offer a much larger improvement in contrast, HDR, motion clarity, response times, and overall image quality than another ordinary IPS monitor. My concern is long-term burn-in from mixed gaming and desktop use. I also wonder whether pairing an OLED main monitor with an IPS display beside it, especially in a vertical orientation, could cause eye strain or make the difference in image quality distracting.
I definitely want to stay with 27 inches and 2560×1440 so both monitors have the same pixel density. For people who have used OLED for a year or more alongside an IPS secondary monitor, would you choose OLED, high-end IPS, Mini-LED IPS, or something else?

I'd go with the OLED. I use a 27-inch WOLED as my main display with two IPS monitors beside it, and I haven't experienced eye strain from the combination. I also use the setup for work, including long spreadsheet sessions, and it has been comfortable.
The newer tandem WOLED panels are supposed to handle text and desktop use better than earlier OLED generations. If possible, visit a store and compare them in person—the OLED models usually stand out immediately because of the contrast and image quality.
I have the ASUS XG27AQWMG and really like it. I haven't been worried about burn-in because the panel uses relatively low power and includes several protection features. OLED still isn't completely risk-free, but sensible habits such as hiding the taskbar, using a screen timeout, and allowing the panel maintenance features to run should reduce the risk substantially.
The bigger issue with that model may be panel uniformity or banding rather than burn-in. Mine looks very good, though quality control can vary between units, so make sure you buy from a retailer with a straightforward return policy.
My main concern is whether the OLED and IPS will look noticeably mismatched next to each other, especially if I end up using the OLED for desktop work and the IPS vertically. I may be overthinking it, though.
I upgraded from a 27-inch 1440p 165Hz IPS to a 27-inch 1440p 240Hz OLED, and I wouldn't want to go back. The difference is much more noticeable than moving from one conventional IPS monitor to another: blacks are genuinely dark, HDR is more convincing, and motion clarity is excellent.
For your 70% gaming usage, I'd accept the small amount of burn-in management and choose OLED, particularly since you already have a perfectly usable IPS monitor for static content.
Option A makes the most sense for your use case. A 27-inch 1440p OLED around 240–280Hz should feel like a meaningful upgrade from your current 180Hz IPS, whereas another IPS panel may mainly give you a higher refresh rate without dramatically changing the image.
Something like the Alienware AW2725D can sometimes be found around €400 and offers 280Hz, so it may fit your budget if it is available at a good price locally.
