Should I Unplug My Laptop at Night if My Apartment Has Unsafe Wiring?

My Dell laptop was recently repaired, and since then its battery has barely held a charge, so I usually have to keep it connected to the charger. The electrical wiring in my apartment also seems unsafe: there are frequent power cuts and I've noticed burnt cables around some outlets. Should I shut the laptop down and unplug it whenever I'm not using it, or is it safe to leave it connected? Could unplugging a powered-off laptop cause any problems when the battery is already failing?

The wiring problem is the urgent issue here, not the laptop. Burnt cables, damaged outlets, and repeated power failures can create a serious fire hazard. Stop using any visibly damaged outlet or cable and have a qualified electrician inspect the installation. If you rent, report it to the landlord or the appropriate local safety authority.

Since the battery now needs constant charging immediately after a repair, I’d take the laptop back to the shop and ask them to diagnose whether the battery or charging circuitry was affected. Until the apartment’s wiring is inspected, avoid leaving the charger connected unattended.

Unplugging the laptop while it’s shut down won’t hurt it, even with a weak battery. The battery itself may simply be old or may have been damaged during the repair, so ask the repair shop to check it. If it’s swollen, unusually hot, or physically pushing against the case, stop using it and have it removed or replaced.

A UPS can help protect the laptop from brief outages and voltage fluctuations, especially if you need it running continuously. It’s useful protection, but it isn’t a substitute for repairing unsafe building wiring.
