I'm currently using an RTX 2050 laptop and want to upgrade to a desktop for college work and gaming. My priorities are coding first, gaming second, running local LLMs third, and HPC work fourth. The RX 9070 XT with 16GB VRAM, RTX 5070 with 12GB, and RTX 5060 Ti with 16GB are all priced around $1,000 where I live. Which one would be the best overall choice, especially for local AI workloads?

The 5060 Ti 16GB only makes sense if it is substantially cheaper. At the same price as the 9070 XT and 5070, it gives up too much gaming performance. Between the other two, get the 9070 XT for gaming and VRAM, or choose the 5070 only if CUDA compatibility is essential for your planned AI tools.
For college coding and normal coursework, you probably won’t need a powerful GPU specifically for school. Many programs use shared servers or cloud systems for demanding HPC and machine-learning tasks. Choose based on the games and local projects you actually expect to run rather than assuming every class will require a high-end workstation.
The RTX 5070 may still be worth considering for local AI because Nvidia’s CUDA and software ecosystem are generally better supported. However, 12GB of VRAM can become the limiting factor with larger LLMs, so the extra memory on the 9070 XT or 5060 Ti may be more useful depending on the models you plan to run.
More VRAM does not automatically make a card faster, but it can determine whether a model fits at all. If a model exceeds 12GB, the 5070 may need compromises or system memory, which can greatly reduce performance.
For gaming and general GPU performance, the RX 9070 XT is the strongest option here. Its 16GB of VRAM also gives it more room for larger games and local models than the 12GB RTX 5070. Unless you specifically need Nvidia features, the 9070 XT looks like the best value at the same price.

That’s fair, but having a local GPU can still be useful for experimenting whenever I want. I just wouldn’t make school requirements the only reason to buy one.
