My current PC uses an Intel i5-7600K, Gigabyte B250M-D3H-CF motherboard, 32GB of DDR4, and a GTX 1060 3GB. Gaming is no longer my main priority; I mainly use the system for Android Studio, software development, DevSecOps experiments, local AI inference, multitasking, and occasional streaming. I still play games such as Counter-Strike 2, Valheim, No Man's Sky, DayZ, and World of Warships, but I cannot afford a GPU upgrade right now and may wait two or three years before replacing the graphics card. The CPU is currently the biggest limitation, especially during builds and general multitasking. With roughly $500 available, would it be better to buy a DDR4-compatible platform such as an i5-14600K system, consider a cheaper AM4 upgrade, or keep using the current PC and save for a complete DDR5 CPU, motherboard, and memory upgrade? I would like the next upgrade to remain useful for development workloads for several years while avoiding unnecessary power consumption and poor platform longevity.

The i5-14600K would be a major improvement for compiling, Android Studio, multitasking, and other heavily threaded work, while letting you reuse your 32GB of DDR4. A DDR4 version should still perform well in games and general use. It is not the newest platform, but if the CPU and motherboard fit your budget, it can be a practical upgrade rather than waiting years with a sluggish system.
Do not overlook the used GPU market. A used GTX 1080 Ti could substantially improve current gaming performance, while cards such as the RTX 2070 or 2080 may be more useful for experimenting with local AI because of better feature support. Even an older card can be a temporary way to run smaller models while you continue using cloud services and save for a future GPU. The right choice depends heavily on how much of the $500 you want to spend now.
A cheaper LGA1700 build could offer better value. An i5-12400F with an affordable motherboard would be a big step up from the 7600K for gaming and everyday work. If development and compilation are the priority, an i5-13400F or 14400F adds more cores and may be worth choosing if the price difference is reasonable. AM4 is also viable on the used market, but newer Intel options may provide stronger single-core performance at similar prices.
The 13400F and 14400F sound like especially sensible options. I will compare their prices with the cost of a 14600K platform before deciding.

I may check local used listings so I can inspect the card and deal with the seller directly if something goes wrong. If I find a reliable bargain, I could keep using cloud compute while saving for a larger upgrade.
