How much RAM should I add to my Dell Inspiron 3501 for coding and cybersecurity?

I'm new to laptop hardware and want to upgrade my Dell Inspiron 3501 before getting more serious about coding and cybersecurity. It has an 11th-generation Intel Core i3-1115G4, 4GB of RAM with about 3.73GB usable, Intel UHD integrated graphics, a 64-bit version of Windows, and roughly 1.84TB of storage. Memory usage often stays around 90–98% even when I'm not doing anything especially demanding. I'd like to use VS Code, programming tools, Linux or WSL, Wireshark, networking utilities, cybersecurity labs and CTFs, and possibly virtual machines later. I've confirmed that the laptop uses SODIMM memory and has two slots, with one currently occupied. Should I add another 4GB module for 8GB total or replace the existing module with two 8GB modules for 16GB? What DDR4 speed and specifications should I look for, and what precautions should I take during installation? Would 16GB make a meaningful difference, or would the i3 processor become the main limitation? Are there any other worthwhile upgrades?

For this laptop, look for laptop DDR4 SODIMM memory. DDR4-3200 is generally the right specification for the 11th-generation platform, although the system may run it at a lower speed depending on the exact configuration. Since you have two slots, two matching modules are preferable because they enable dual-channel operation. Check the exact service manual or Dell specifications for your configuration before ordering.

I checked Task Manager and it reports SODIMM with one of two slots used. I’d also like to learn more about computer hardware in general. Are there good places to start?

The RAM upgrade is worthwhile, but the processor still matters for virtual machines. The i3-1115G4 has two cores and four threads, so one lightweight VM should be reasonable, while several VMs or heavier labs may feel slow. Coding, browsing, WSL and many networking tools should benefit greatly from 16GB. Before opening the laptop, shut it down completely, unplug the charger, disconnect the internal battery if practical, and discharge static by touching grounded metal. Install the modules carefully at an angle, press them down until the clips lock, and confirm the full capacity in BIOS or Windows afterward. Since this is a laptop, RAM and storage are usually the most practical upgrades; replacing the motherboard or CPU is generally not economical.

I’d choose 16GB as two matching 8GB modules if you can afford it. Moving from 4GB to 8GB will help noticeably, but 16GB gives you much more room for development tools, browsers, WSL, security utilities and a virtual machine. Buy two identical DDR4 SODIMMs, ideally rated at 3200 MT/s. Some systems may operate them at 2666 MT/s, which is normal and not a problem. Dell lists 16GB as the supported maximum for many Inspiron 3501 configurations, so verify your exact model before considering anything larger.
