The microphone is mainly there to recognize voice commands, such as searches or phrases directed at Roku. A device may briefly listen for a wake phrase or button activation, but that is different from uploading every conversation for advertising. Companies’ privacy policies are worth checking, though the pop-up alone is not proof that the conversation was recorded.
That trivia may have come from the streaming app, the television’s content-recognition feature, or a contextual pop-up service rather than Roku itself. The timing is definitely eerie, but the “one in 15 billion” estimate probably assumes far more than anyone can actually measure. Roku devices with voice remotes do contain microphones, but that does not necessarily mean they continuously record everything in the room.
