I'm fairly new to PC building and am considering upgrading from an RTX 3070 Ti to an RX 9070 for about $650. My system has a Ryzen 7 5800X, 32GB of RAM, and what should be an 850W power supply. The PC was bought used, and I don't have the original modular PSU cables. Is the performance increase worth the cost, and what power connectors would the RX 9070 need?

Before spending the full amount, compare the price with the RX 9070 XT. If the XT is only around $150 more, it may offer better value, but the extra performance is usually closer to a modest 10–13% increase rather than a dramatic jump. If $650 is already stretching your budget, the regular RX 9070 is still a sensible upgrade.
Find the exact PSU model before deciding what to do. If it’s already five or six years old and came with a second-hand system, replacing it is probably the safest option. Buy a good-quality 850W unit and use only the cables included with that new PSU. That solves the missing-cable problem and gives the new card a reliable power source.
The upgrade should provide a noticeable performance increase, especially at higher resolutions, and 16GB of VRAM gives the RX 9070 more breathing room. Whether it’s worth $650 depends on the games you play and your target resolution. Your Ryzen 7 5800X is still capable, so it shouldn’t be a major limitation in most situations.
That’s reassuring. I was mainly concerned about bottlenecking, but I’d rather keep the 5800X for now since the only meaningful AM4 upgrade would be a 5800X3D.
Do not use random modular PSU cables, even if the connectors fit. The pin layouts can differ between manufacturers and models, and mixing cables can damage the power supply or graphics card. The RX 9070 generally uses two 8-pin PCIe connectors, but check the exact card’s specifications before buying anything.
Some brands have compatible cable families, such as specific Corsair Type 3, Type 4, or Type 5 cables, but compatibility must be confirmed for the exact PSU model. If you don’t know the model, assume the cables are not interchangeable.
I’ll check the label when I clean the system. Replacing it makes sense if it turns out to be an older or questionable model.
