I'm trying to buy Apple gift cards with a Chase Sapphire card to help reach a $5,000 welcome-bonus spending requirement. My first attempt produced a message saying the payment authorization failed. Chase says it isn't receiving an authorization or decline from its systems. Since then, I've tried Apple's website, Amazon, Best Buy, and an in-store purchase, but each attempt has failed—some appear to process briefly before being declined later.
Apple opened and reviewed a case, but the purchase still failed after they said I could try again. Another representative recommended waiting 72 hours, which I did. I've also called Chase many times, and the card works for other purchases, including other gift cards. Neither company has been able to identify a block or explain what is happening. Has anyone dealt with this kind of Apple gift card restriction, and is there a reliable way to resolve it?

If the purchase is being made through Amazon, Best Buy, or another retailer, Apple cannot control that retailer’s payment system. Those transactions may be screened by the retailer, the gift-card processor, or Chase, especially because digital gift-card purchases are commonly flagged for fraud. Ask Chase’s fraud or payments department to check for merchant-category or gift-card restrictions and ask the retailer to investigate the failed authorization using the transaction details.
The fact that the card works for other gift cards doesn’t necessarily rule out a security block. Apple gift cards can trigger separate risk checks based on the amount, frequency, delivery method, account history, or billing information. Make sure the billing address and account details match exactly, stop repeatedly retrying for a while, and then try one small purchase directly through Apple. If that still fails, ask Apple specifically whether the Apple Account or payment method has a gift-card purchasing restriction rather than a general account block.
