I'm comparing two gaming PC bundles for CPU-intensive games. The first includes a Ryzen 9 9800X3D, an X870 motherboard, and 16GB of DDR5-6000 CL30 memory for $850. The second has a Ryzen 7 7800X3D, a B850 motherboard, and 32GB of DDR5-6000 CL36 memory for $770. My main concern is whether the higher CL36 latency will noticeably hurt gaming performance. I currently don't seem to exceed 16GB of RAM, so I'm also unsure whether upgrading to 32GB is worthwhile.

The 32GB bundle is probably the better overall value. The 7800X3D is still an excellent gaming CPU, and CL36 at 6000 MT/s isn’t a serious problem. X3D processors are less sensitive to memory latency because of their large L3 cache, so the difference between CL30 and CL36 is unlikely to be noticeable in real gameplay.
The answer also depends on whether the bundles are new or used. If they’re new, compare their parts against current retail prices because the 9800X3D bundle may be closer in value than it first appears. If they’re used, the 7800X3D and 32GB bundle is the stronger deal; the 9800X3D package sounds overpriced for only 16GB of RAM.
If you can find the 9800X3D bundle at a lower price or add another 16GB kit cheaply, then it becomes more attractive. At these listed prices, though, the second bundle is the safer buy.
I’d choose the second option unless you specifically need the extra CPU performance or newer platform features. Paying $80 more for the 9800X3D while getting half the memory doesn’t look worthwhile for a gaming-focused build, especially when the 7800X3D remains very capable.
So you’d take the 7800X3D and 32GB even if my current RAM usage never goes above 16GB?
Even if your current games stay under 16GB, 32GB gives you more headroom for newer titles, background apps, and future upgrades.
