I'm using a PC that was originally built for streaming, but I mainly use it for gaming now. My current Intel i5-8400 is struggling with some of the games I play, so I'm considering upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 5 7600. I'm new to building PCs and would like to know which other components need to be replaced.
My current specifications are:
- Intel Core i5-8400
- NVIDIA RTX 2060
- ASRock Z370 PRO4/OEM motherboard
Would I need a new motherboard, RAM, CPU cooler, or power supply? Do I need to reinstall Windows after changing platforms? I'm working with a limited budget, so I'd appreciate suggestions for keeping the upgrade affordable.

You generally don’t have to reinstall Windows after replacing the motherboard and CPU, but a clean installation is recommended when moving from Intel to AMD. Back up your files first, make sure you have your Windows license information, and install the new chipset and motherboard drivers afterward. Windows may also ask you to reactivate.
The Ryzen 5 7600 is not compatible with your current motherboard, so you’ll need an AM5 motherboard. You’ll also need DDR5 memory because your existing RAM is DDR4. A 2x8GB kit is the minimum I’d consider, though 2x16GB is a better long-term choice if your budget allows. You can use a parts compatibility tool to plan the upgrade before buying anything.
At minimum, budget for the processor, an AM5 motherboard, and DDR5 RAM. The 7600 usually includes a basic stock cooler, so you may not need to buy one separately unless you want lower temperatures or quieter operation. Your RTX 2060 can continue to work with the new system, assuming your power supply has the necessary connectors and enough wattage.
