I usually skip a generation, so I've been considering upgrading my RTX 3080 Ti. The rest of my system is current, including a Ryzen 7 9800X3D, and I mainly play at 3440×1440, with occasional 4K gaming on my TV.
At local prices, cards below the RTX 5070 Ti seem more like sidegrades or downgrades. The RTX 5070 Ti and higher-end models are expensive, while the RTX 5080 would be the first Nvidia option that feels like a substantial upgrade—but the most affordable models are around $1,700 here, far above MSRP. I can afford it, but I'm not sure it makes sense to pay such an inflated price. I could potentially resell it later, though I don't want to justify a purchase solely as an investment.
The Radeon RX 9070 XT is also an option. It offers more VRAM and a decent performance increase, but the uplift may not feel huge. Nvidia still has advantages in upscaling, ray reconstruction, and ray tracing, although I mainly game and do some hobbyist game development, so I'm not dependent on CUDA. Is anything actually worth upgrading to right now, or would it be smarter to keep the 3080 Ti and wait?

The RX 9070 XT is probably the most sensible upgrade if you want something now and don’t need Nvidia-specific features. It brings more VRAM and roughly a 25–50% performance improvement depending on the game, with the biggest gains showing up in demanding rasterized or ray-traced titles. It still isn’t a transformative upgrade, though, so its value depends heavily on your local price and how much you can recover by selling the 3080 Ti.
The RTX 5070 Ti can be around 35% faster in traditional performance and benefits from newer features, but I wouldn’t recommend it at inflated pricing. The RTX 5080 is a clearer upgrade, yet paying around $1,700 for it is hard to justify unless money genuinely doesn’t matter or you specifically need its extra performance. A good rule is to upgrade only when the current card can’t meet your target frame rate or image quality; otherwise, wait for a future generation with a much larger performance jump.
I usually wait for about a two-times performance jump as well. From a 3080 Ti, that means the current midrange and upper-midrange cards don’t really make sense unless the price is unusually good.
At current prices, I’d probably keep the 3080 Ti. It’s still a very capable card for 3440×1440, and most of the available upgrades are either too small to notice or badly overpriced. I’d only upgrade if your current games are regularly missing your target frame rate or forcing compromises you dislike.
That’s where I’m landing too. Some newer games are starting to push it, but I don’t want to spend a huge amount for a merely better version of what I already have.
The tradeoff is that Nvidia’s upscaling and ray reconstruction are still better in a number of games. For someone who cares about those features, the 9070 XT’s raw performance advantage may not tell the whole story.
