Is a Canadian three-prong laptop power supply safe to use with a two-prong EU adapter?

I'm in Belgium with a Canadian laptop power supply that has a three-prong plug. I only have a two-prong adapter for EU outlets and have already used it for several days. The supply is rated for 230 W with a 19.5 V / 11.8 A DC output, and its AC input label says 100–240 V, 50/60 Hz. When I tried reversing the setup, I could feel a slight static sensation on the laptop's metal surface. Is it safe to continue using this adapter, or do I need a properly grounded EU cable or adapter?

A hotel, travel shop, pharmacy, electronics store, or general department store may have a suitable adapter sooner than an online order. Make sure it is rated for the mains voltage and preserves the earth connection; don’t just force the three-prong plug into a two-prong arrangement.

The main issue isn’t the output rating; it’s the connection to the wall. A three-prong supply is designed to have its earth pin connected, and a cheap two-prong adapter may leave the casing and laptop less protected if an internal fault occurs. A proper earthed adapter or replacement EU cable is the safe solution.

Check the AC input label first. Since yours is rated for 100–240 V and 50/60 Hz, it can operate on European mains without a voltage converter. However, the two-prong adapter removes the protective earth connection. Get a properly grounded North American-to-EU adapter or, better yet, an EU mains cable that fits the power supply. Don’t keep using it if you feel tingling or static on the laptop.

You probably don’t need a step-down transformer because the supply accepts the full European voltage range. Look for a locally available grounded travel adapter, electronics-store cable, or compatible IEC C5 ‘cloverleaf’ lead. Until then, unplug it if there’s any tingling, heat, smell, sparking, or other unusual behavior.

The label does say 100–240 V and 50/60 Hz, so I ordered a grounded adapter and will stop using the two-prong setup until it arrives.
