Which Parts Should I Upgrade First in My 2021 Gaming PC?

I bought a prebuilt gaming PC in 2021, and its performance is starting to feel dated. I'd like to upgrade it rather than replace the whole system, but I'm not sure which components are holding it back. The current specifications are an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super, AMD Ryzen 5 3600X, 16 GB of RAM, a 1 TB hard drive, a 500 GB SSD, Windows 11, and an ASUS ROG Strix GH15DH case. I believe the power supply is 500 watts. What should I upgrade first, and are there any compatibility or power concerns I should check?

For gaming, the RTX 2060 Super is probably the main limit once the CPU is upgraded. A newer graphics card can help, but a 500-watt power supply may restrict your choices. Check the exact PSU model, its PCIe power connectors, and its quality before buying a GPU. Depending on the card you choose, upgrading the power supply may be necessary too. Updating the motherboard BIOS before installing a newer Ryzen 5000-series processor is also a good idea.

There’s no need to replace the whole computer immediately. If the system still does what you need, upgrade in stages: move games off the hard drive, add another 16 GB of matching DDR4 memory, then consider a 5700X3D and a graphics card based on your budget and resolution. Waiting is also reasonable if performance is acceptable, since newer hardware may offer better value later.

Waiting is fine with me. I mainly wanted to understand which parts are worth planning for rather than blindly replacing everything.

The first thing to figure out is what feels slow. For general responsiveness and game loading, replace the mechanical hard drive with an NVMe SSD and consider a clean Windows installation. Your Ryzen 5 3600X platform also has a strong upgrade path, so a Ryzen 7 5700X3D or 5800X3D could provide a substantial gaming improvement without replacing the motherboard or memory. Moving to 32 GB of RAM would also be worthwhile for newer games and multitasking.
