I bought an MSI PRO B550M-VC WiFi motherboard and a Ryzen 7 5800X3D Anniversary Edition processor. Will they work together immediately, or will I need to update the motherboard BIOS before the system can boot? I'm new to building PCs and would appreciate advice on how to check the installed BIOS version and what to do if an update is required.

There’s a good chance a recently manufactured board already has the required BIOS, but it isn’t guaranteed. Fortunately, the rear-panel Flash BIOS button makes this easy to fix. You’ll need a USB flash drive and another computer or device to download the correct BIOS file and prepare the drive.
If the system doesn’t boot normally, use BIOS Flashback rather than worrying about finding an older processor. The feature is specifically there to update the BIOS when the installed CPU isn’t supported by the current version.
The motherboard is compatible with the 5800X3D, but don’t assume every new board will have a sufficiently recent BIOS installed. This CPU requires BIOS version 7C95vH2 or newer. Check the BIOS version on the motherboard’s label or packaging if available. If it’s too old, you can update it with the board’s Flash BIOS button without installing a supported CPU first.
Is the BIOS version listed somewhere in the box or manual? I’m still learning how all of this works.
