I've built PCs before, but this is my first major upgrade. I'm moving from an Intel processor to a Ryzen CPU, which also means I'm installing a new motherboard, and I'm adding a new graphics card. Do I need to wipe my drives or reinstall Windows, or can I keep my current installation? Is there anything specific I should do before or during the upgrade?

Before installing Windows, check whether the new motherboard needs a BIOS update to support your Ryzen processor. Download the appropriate BIOS onto a USB drive ahead of time and update it if necessary. You don’t need to erase the entire system manually; just back up your files and format the Windows partition during setup. Also remember to install the CPU carefully, apply the right amount of thermal paste, and check the cooler mounting pressure.
You can sometimes boot normally after switching platforms, but old chipset drivers and settings may cause instability. If you don’t want to reinstall immediately, remove the old chipset drivers and use a display-driver cleanup tool before installing the new AMD and GPU drivers. A fresh install is still the more reliable route.
Since you’re changing both the CPU platform and motherboard, a clean Windows installation is the safest option. Back up anything important first, then reinstall Windows on the operating-system drive and install the new motherboard chipset and graphics drivers. Your other storage drives don’t need to be wiped.
