How Can I Connect 6–8 Monitors to a PC with Limited GPU Ports?

I bought my PC prebuilt because I didn't have time to assemble one myself. The graphics card has one HDMI port and three DisplayPort outputs, while the motherboard has one HDMI and one DisplayPort connection. I'm a streamer and would ideally like to run around six to eight monitors for the software and tools I use. I've heard it may be problematic to use the motherboard's video outputs alongside a dedicated graphics card, possibly because of driver or Windows issues. I'm also planning to upgrade the graphics card, likely to an RTX 5070. What would be the most practical way to support that many displays?

A small professional or workstation display card could work well as the secondary adapter. Some low-power cards provide four native DisplayPort outputs in a single slot, which is useful for driving additional monitors without adding much heat or power consumption. I would not count on the motherboard’s HDMI and DisplayPort outputs working alongside the dedicated GPU unless your CPU, motherboard, and firmware explicitly support that configuration.

Many graphics cards are limited to four active displays at once, so adapters alone may not be enough for six to eight monitors. An MST hub can split one DisplayPort connection into multiple displays, but you need to check the card’s display limits, resolution, refresh rates, and whether the hub supports the connections you need.

MST is worth considering if several of the screens are basic desktop monitors, but it may not be ideal for high-refresh or high-resolution displays.

The easiest solution is to use DisplayPort-to-HDMI cables or active adapters for the three DisplayPort outputs. That lets you connect four monitors directly to the graphics card without needing extra hardware. Use adapters with a short cable rather than rigid plug-style adapters, since they put less strain on the ports.

A second graphics card is usually the more reliable option for this many monitors. You can keep the main card for gaming and streaming, then use a lower-power secondary card for extra screens. Make sure the motherboard has room for it and that the power supply can handle both cards.
