I've installed Linux on my home desktop before, but never on a laptop. My HP 250 G8 has become very sluggish under Windows 10, and I'd like to keep using it for office work for a few more years. Is this model generally well supported by Linux Mint, and are there any laptop-specific installation steps or hardware issues I should watch for?

The HP 250 G8 is generally reported to work well with Linux, so Mint should be a reasonable choice. Follow the normal Mint installation instructions, and check the laptop’s UEFI settings if it refuses to boot from the USB. Some HP firmware menus can be confusing, but there usually isn’t anything special required.
Try running Mint from a USB flash drive first rather than installing immediately. That lets you confirm the hardware works without changing Windows. For the actual installation, staying connected by Ethernet can help with updates and drivers if Wi-Fi needs additional setup.
The installation process is basically the same as on a desktop. Create a bootable USB, start Mint in the live environment, and test everything before installing—especially Wi-Fi, the trackpad, audio, display brightness, and sleep/wake. If those work there, the installed system should be fine too.
If the laptop still has a mechanical hard drive, replacing it with an SSD will probably make the biggest difference in responsiveness. Ventoy is also a convenient way to prepare a USB drive if you want to test multiple Linux images.
