Our three-person IT team manages about 800 devices across multiple locations, but we currently lack both a formal onboarding/offboarding process and a dedicated IT asset management system. Microsoft Intune is planned as an upcoming project, so we're also thinking about how inventory and assignments could eventually stay synchronized with it. I've been looking at Snipe-IT and Allwhere, and I'm especially interested in experiences using Snipe-IT alongside Jira. What tools, integrations, and processes have worked well for other small IT teams starting from scratch? I'd also appreciate lessons learned about tracking more than physical devices, such as virtual machines, software licenses, SaaS accounts, and equipment procurement.

I’ve used Snipe-IT with Jira and found the combination worked fine. Don’t limit the inventory to laptops and other physical devices—include virtual machines, licenses, SaaS accounts, and anything else you need to maintain. Linking those records to tickets and change requests makes the inventory much more useful and helps keep it current.
GLPI is another option worth evaluating. It can provide inventory, asset tracking, and service-management features in one platform, so it may be useful if you want broader functionality than a simple equipment register.
Snipe-IT worked very well for us, and we would probably still be using it if we hadn’t moved asset management into our ERP. The ERP made more sense because accounting, maintenance, and traveling technicians also needed access. For a small IT-only team, though, Snipe-IT is a capable option, especially if you’re comfortable self-hosting it.
Jira Assets can be convenient if it’s already included with your Jira Service Management licensing. The integration is excellent because assets can be linked directly to tickets, but the administration side feels clunky. I’d use it as a central database populated automatically from other systems, rather than relying on staff to maintain everything manually.
We use separate tools for tickets, the CMDB, automation, and development workflows, with some integration between them. Snipe-IT is a reasonable choice, but procurement and financial tracking are where many ITAM tools become limited. Eventually, you may need either strong coordination with finance or an ERP that covers the entire asset lifecycle.
