I got a spam text right after transferring my number to a new phone—should I worry?

I moved from an iPhone 13 to an iPhone 17 and transferred my existing number during setup. Almost immediately afterward, I received a suspicious text that only said "hello." A lookup identified the sender as high-risk spam, so I blocked the number. I had already been receiving occasional spam texts on my old phone, but the timing made me wonder whether the transfer or new device caused it. Is there anything I should be concerned about?

The number transfer may have happened electronically during setup, but that doesn’t expose your device to random texters. Spam systems send messages to large lists of phone numbers, and the timing was most likely just coincidence. Don’t reply or click any links in similar messages; block and report them when possible.

There’s probably no connection to the new phone. Since you kept the same number, the message was sent to your phone number, not specifically to the iPhone 17. It would likely have reached your old phone if you had still been using it. Blocking the sender is enough unless you start seeing a sudden increase in suspicious messages or account-security alerts.
