I'm upgrading a CPU on a GA-P35-DS3R motherboard with an LGA775 socket. When I removed the CPU cooler, I accidentally pulled the circular mounting bracket/base off with it. I've ordered a replacement bracket, but I'm having trouble understanding how the metal clips or pins on the heatsink are supposed to fit over it. The bracket currently feels loose and doesn't seem to have much tension. Is that normal before the heatsink is fully mounted, or could the bracket or cooler clips be damaged? Should the bracket only become secure once the cooler is pressed into place and the pins are locked through the motherboard?

It’s difficult to tell what’s wrong without seeing the mounting area clearly. Photos or a close-up video of the bracket, the heatsink clips, and the motherboard holes would help confirm whether the parts are compatible or damaged. Avoid forcing the clips until you can verify that everything is aligned.
That makes sense. I’ve recorded a close-up showing how the bracket and clips are sitting, so the alignment and fit can be inspected more easily.
