How can I connect a Nintendo Switch to an older TV/VCR combo?

I'm trying to use a Nintendo Switch with an older television that has a built-in VCR. The TV appears to use red, white, and yellow AV inputs, while the Switch outputs video through HDMI. I have tested several RCA cables, HDMI cables, and an adapter that work with other devices, but I can't get a picture or sound when the TV is set to the AUX channel. What type of adapter or connection do I need, and are there any specific settings I should check?

The exact adapter model is important because many inexpensive adapters work in the opposite direction. Look for wording like “HDMI to AV” or “HDMI to composite,” and verify that HDMI is listed as the source and RCA/AV as the output. Also confirm that the Switch dock is being used, since the Switch itself does not provide analog video through its USB-C port.

The Switch only outputs HDMI, while the TV/VCR combo likely accepts analog RCA or composite AV. Make sure you’re using an HDMI-to-AV converter, not an RCA-to-HDMI adapter. The direction matters: HDMI should be the input, and the converter’s red, white, and yellow outputs should connect to the TV. These converters are usually inexpensive, though they may need USB power.

Check the labels on the TV’s connectors and select the matching input, such as AUX, AV, Line In, or Video 1. Yellow carries the picture, while red and white carry the right and left audio channels. If the TV only has outputs rather than inputs, it won’t be possible to connect the Switch directly there; you would need another compatible input or a different display.
