My laptop mouse moved on its own in public—should I be worried about hacking?

I'm not very tech-savvy and was using my laptop at a library when the mouse suddenly started behaving strangely. After I stopped touching it, the pointer moved by itself and even pulled one of my two open tabs into a separate window. I put the laptop to sleep, disconnected it from the internet, and ran a quick scan, which reported no threats. What could have caused this, and what steps should I take to make sure my laptop is safe and prevent it from happening again?

The touchpad may have been registering accidental touches or could be malfunctioning. Try disabling it temporarily with the touchpad function key, usually one of the F-keys used with Fn. If the problem stops, have the touchpad checked or use a separate USB mouse.

For reassurance, run a full scan with the built-in Windows antivirus, then reconnect to the internet and run a second-opinion scan with Malwarebytes. Also review Installed Apps for unfamiliar remote-access programs such as AnyDesk or RustDesk, and make sure Windows Remote Access is disabled. If nothing suspicious appears, a hardware or wireless-mouse issue is much more likely than someone controlling the laptop.

The most likely explanation is a mouse or connection problem rather than a hack. If it’s a basic wireless mouse with a USB receiver, another nearby wireless mouse could possibly have interfered with it, especially in a public place. Replacing the battery, reconnecting the receiver, or testing with a different mouse would be good first steps.

You can narrow it down if it happens again: disconnect the laptop from Wi-Fi while the pointer is moving. If the behavior continues, the mouse or touchpad is probably the cause. If it stops immediately, investigate remote-access software and account security further. A scan tool that checks online services cannot perform that part while the computer is offline, so reconnect only when you’re ready to use it.
