My microphone stopped responding while I was playing a ranked match of CS2. I was trying to use voice chat when I noticed my teammates couldn't hear me. The microphone is brand new and was recently replaced, so I'm unsure whether the game caused a software issue or if the hardware failed. It also doesn't work when connected to my laptop. Is there a reliable way to test whether the microphone itself is dead?

A game like CS2 shouldn’t be able to physically damage a microphone. Test it outside the game using your operating system’s microphone or sound recorder settings. If it fails there too—and especially if it also fails on your laptop—the microphone, cable, or USB adapter is probably defective. Since it’s new, exchanging it may be the simplest option.
Check the basic software causes first: make sure the correct microphone is selected as the input device, confirm the input level isn’t muted, and verify that microphone access is enabled for desktop apps. You can also test it with a voice recorder or another computer. If it doesn’t work on either device, the issue is almost certainly outside CS2 and points to the microphone or its connection.
That’s really frustrating since I only received the replacement today, but I’ll test it through the system audio settings before returning it.
