Is Upgrading from an RTX 4060 Ti to an RTX 5070 Worth It, Especially Used?

I'm considering upgrading from an RTX 4060 Ti to an RTX 5070 and found some used cards on Facebook Marketplace. Is buying a second-hand GPU generally risky, and what should I check before purchasing? I'd also like to know whether the performance improvement is worthwhile. My CPU is an Intel Core i5-14400F, so I don't expect it to bottleneck the upgrade.

Don’t decide based on the model name alone. If the used 5070 is only slightly cheaper than a new card, buying new may be safer because you get clearer warranty coverage and less risk. If the price is substantially lower and you can test it in person, the upgrade makes more sense.

The RTX 5070 is a worthwhile step up from the RTX 4060 Ti, but the value depends heavily on the price. Expect a noticeable performance increase, especially at 1440p, along with newer features such as improved frame generation. Your i5-14400F should pair well with it in most gaming situations.

I’d still compare benchmarks for the games and resolution you use. The 4060 Ti remains a good 1080p card and a reasonable entry-level 1440p option, so the upgrade is less urgent if you’re already happy with its performance.

A used GPU can be a perfectly reasonable purchase, but only if you can verify that it works before handing over the money. Test it with a demanding game or a stress-testing tool such as OCCT, and check for crashes, visual artifacts, unusual fan noise, or overheating. Ask for the original receipt and box too, since warranty transfer rules vary by manufacturer.

It’s also worth finding out the exact brand and model, whether the card was registered, and whether the warranty can be transferred to you.

It may also be worth checking competing cards before buying. Depending on local pricing, a Radeon RX 9070 or 9070 XT could offer strong rasterized performance for similar money, although features, ray tracing, power use, and software preferences should factor into the decision.
