I've been offered a free GPU upgrade, and my current RTX 4070 Super is the only part of my setup that feels behind. I play competitive mouse-and-keyboard games at 1440p, but use a TV for 4K story-driven games with a controller. The available prices are 5090 for 1,753 KWD ($5,683), 5080 for 585 KWD ($1,896), 5070 Ti for 474 KWD ($1,536), and 9070 XT for 330 KWD ($1,070). Since this is a gift from my dad, I can't simply decline the upgrade, but I also don't want to spend his money on the most expensive option just because it's available—especially since the 5090 is far above its normal retail price. Which card makes the most sense for my use case and offers a worthwhile improvement over the 4070 Super?

The 9070 XT is the best value, but it may not be a substantial enough step up from a 4070 Super to justify the purchase price if you were paying yourself. Since the upgrade is a gift, the 5080 seems like the sensible middle ground: strong enough for 4K, useful for ray-traced games, and nowhere near the 5090’s extreme cost. I would only consider the 5090 if you specifically need its extra performance for very high refresh rates, demanding productivity workloads, or similar use cases.
Before choosing, check that your power supply, case clearance, cooling, and the rest of the system can support the new card. Performance also depends on your monitor and TV refresh rates. For your gaming mix, though, the 5080 is the easiest recommendation: the 5090 is excessive, the 5070 Ti is poor value at that price, and the 9070 XT is the budget-focused option.
I’d narrow it down to the 9070 XT or 5080. Choose the 9070 XT if you want to keep the cost as reasonable as possible; it’s the strongest value by a wide margin. Choose the 5080 if you want noticeably more performance at 4K or care about ray tracing and path tracing. The 5090 is difficult to justify for gaming at that price, and the 5070 Ti seems overpriced compared with the other choices.
The 5080 is probably the best balance here. It should provide a meaningful improvement for 4K gaming without jumping to the absurd price of the 5090. The 9070 XT is better value, but it may feel less like a major upgrade from your 4070 Super, while the 5070 Ti costs much more than the 9070 XT for roughly similar performance.
That makes sense. I’m mainly trying to avoid accepting an unnecessarily expensive card when the real-world improvement might not justify it.
