I'm planning to upgrade my AM4 gaming PC in December and would like a second opinion on the CPU choice. My current system has a Ryzen 5 5600G, integrated AMD graphics, 16GB of DDR4-3200 memory, an MSI B550M PRO-VDH WIFI motherboard, and a Corsair 750W power supply. I'm considering moving to a Ryzen 7 5800X3D, an RX 6800 XT 16GB, and 32GB of DDR4-3200 while keeping the same motherboard and PSU. I mostly play at 1080p but want to move to 1440p, with games such as Onimusha, The Blood of Dawnwalker, First Light 007, Marvel Rivals, and Valorant in mind. Is the 5800X3D a meaningful upgrade from the 5600G, or would it make more sense to save for an AM5 system?

If the 5800X3D is reasonably priced, it’s probably the best drop-in gaming upgrade for your current AM4 platform. A newer AM5 build would offer a longer upgrade path, but the total cost is much higher because you would also need a motherboard and DDR5 memory. For a budget-conscious upgrade, staying on AM4 makes sense.
Yes, especially for gaming. The 5600G is a relatively weak match for a high-end card like the RX 6800 XT, particularly at 1080p where the CPU is more likely to limit performance. The 5800X3D should provide much better average performance and noticeably stronger 1% lows in CPU-heavy games.
The upgrade is larger than the model names might suggest. The 5600G has only 16MB of L3 cache, while the 5800X3D has 96MB thanks to its 3D V-Cache. That extra cache can make a major difference in CPU-limited games, frame consistency, and minimum FPS. It should pair very well with the 6800 XT at both 1080p and 1440p.
The RX 6800 XT should be a very capable 1440p card, especially at the price you mentioned. A newer GPU could offer newer features, but a discounted used 6800 XT is still excellent value if you trust its condition. For your planned resolution and budget, the 5800X3D plus 6800 XT is a sensible pairing.
The graphics card is coming from a friend for about $250, so that makes it hard to pass up. I was also considering a newer card, but the 6800 XT seems like the better value for this particular upgrade.
The 6800 XT and 5800X3D are a strong combination, and your 750W power supply should generally be sufficient if it is a good-quality unit. Just remember to update the motherboard BIOS before installing the new processor, and make sure the 5800X3D has a capable CPU cooler.
That’s my thinking too. I considered moving to AM5, but I can’t really justify the extra cost right now, so getting more life out of my current motherboard seems more practical.
