Since installing the latest Windows 11 update, my laptop freezes whenever I open applications and has severe frame drops. The laptop has a Core i5 processor, a 512GB SSD, an NVIDIA MX250 alongside integrated graphics, and 8GB of non-upgradable DDR4 RAM. Could the update be responsible for the slowdown, or is the limited memory the bigger issue? I'm considering troubleshooting or switching to Linux and would appreciate advice on the best next steps.

A clean-up can help if background apps and unnecessary startup services are consuming resources, but avoid using aggressive one-click debloating tools. First try disabling unneeded startup programs, uninstalling software you no longer use, checking for driver updates, and running Windows’ built-in system and disk checks.
Linux may feel lighter on this hardware, particularly with a lightweight desktop environment, but it will only be a good replacement if the applications and games you rely on work properly there. I’d troubleshoot the current installation first rather than switching operating systems solely because of one update.
Windows 11 has become increasingly demanding, and 8GB of RAM can be a major bottleneck, especially when several apps or browser tabs are open. Check Task Manager while the freezing happens to see whether memory usage is near 100%. Also make sure the SSD has plenty of free space and that your graphics and chipset drivers are current.

That makes sense. I’ll check memory usage and drivers first, then consider a lightweight Linux setup if Windows remains unusable.
