Can I install Windows 11 on part of an external SSD while keeping the rest for storage?

I use Fedora 44 on my laptop's internal SSD and have a Samsung USB SSD for additional storage. I'd like to install Windows 11 on a separate partition of that external drive while keeping another partition for files such as music and games. Is this practical, and what problems might I encounter with booting, drivers, performance, or the existing data?

The claim that an operating system can never run from an external drive is too absolute. External Windows installations have been done, but Windows 11 does not officially make the process straightforward, and compatibility varies between computers. Treat it as an experimental setup rather than something guaranteed to work.

Even when it works, running a full Windows installation over USB usually isn’t ideal. Performance and stability depend heavily on the enclosure, port, and SSD, and disconnecting the drive while Windows is running could corrupt the installation or files. A separate internal drive or a virtual machine may be a more dependable option.

It may be possible by partitioning the external SSD into separate Windows and storage volumes, but booting Windows from a USB-connected drive can be unreliable. The firmware, Windows installer, and USB storage drivers all need to cooperate, and updates or changes to the drive could make it stop booting. Back up the storage partition before attempting anything.

Thanks. I might look into using a Thunderbolt connection instead, since I only need Windows for applications such as Teams and Word for college.
