I found what I thought was a fairly new 2TB SkyHawk internal SSD and brought it home hoping to use it for extra storage. My SSD reader works with another known-good drive, but this one never appeared on my laptop. It also makes a noise that sounds like something is trying to spin up, so I suspect a hardware problem. A SkyHawk surveillance drive is generally a mechanical hard disk, not an SSD. Hard disks contain spinning platters and can make startup noises; SSDs have no moving parts and should be silent. Since it is not detected and is making unusual sounds, it most likely has a mechanical failure—the likely reason it was discarded.
There probably isn’t a practical repair you can do at home. A failed 2TB hard drive usually costs more to recover or repair than it is worth, unless it contains uniquely valuable data. Avoid repeatedly powering it on, and take it to an electronics recycling facility rather than putting it back in the trash.
You can double-check the basics with a proper SATA-to-USB adapter, a different cable, and another computer, but if the drive still cannot be detected and clicks, buzzes, or repeatedly spins up and stops, stop testing it. Opening the drive outside a clean-room environment can permanently reduce the chance of professional data recovery.
