I'm trying to access a USB drive on my Windows 11 laptop, but the computer doesn't recognize it. I checked Device Manager and couldn't find a solution. Disk Management also refuses to open whenever the drive is plugged in. I tested the drive on an Xbox as well, but it wasn't detected there either. The drive contains Xbox 360 mod files, so I'd prefer to recover the data without formatting or changing anything that could erase it. What should I try next?

First, test the USB port with another device to make sure the port itself works. Then try the drive with a different USB cable or adapter, if applicable, and on another computer. Since it also wasn’t recognized by the Xbox, the drive or its enclosure may be failing rather than this being only a Windows issue.
Because the drive has files you want to keep, avoid formatting it, initializing it, or creating a new partition. If Disk Management hangs only when this drive is connected, that can point to a failing drive. Try a different port and computer, and consider data-recovery software or a professional recovery service if the files are important.
