Which CPU should I choose for a gaming PC in 2026: i5-14600K/KF or Ryzen 5 7600X?

If you’re buying DDR5 either way, I’d lean toward the Ryzen 5 7600X on AM5. Gaming performance is close, and the bigger advantage is that you can potentially upgrade the same motherboard to a newer Ryzen or X3D processor later. Use a decent B650 board and a 2x16GB DDR5-6000 CL30 kit. If you already own DDR4, the Intel build can be cheaper overall.

For a gaming-only build at similar total prices, I’d choose AM5. The 7600X is already plenty fast, and having a future CPU upgrade path is more valuable than the 14600K’s extra cores for most games. The Intel option is still reasonable if you already have compatible DDR4 or find a particularly good bundle.

The 14600K/KF makes more sense when you’re reusing DDR4 or need the extra cores for productivity. It’s a strong all-around chip, but its LGA1700 platform is effectively at the end of its upgrade path. Starting a new DDR5 build around it is less appealing unless the CPU, board, or memory bundle is substantially cheaper.

Don’t forget the rest of the system: the GPU, resolution, and game settings will usually affect performance much more than the difference between these CPUs. If you can stretch the budget, an X3D Ryzen chip may be a better gaming-focused upgrade than either of these, but otherwise the 7600X is the safer new-build choice.

Before choosing, compare the total platform price rather than just the processor. The 7600X requires DDR5, while some 14600K/KF motherboards support DDR4. That memory difference can outweigh a small gaming-performance gap. Also check newer options such as the Ryzen 5 9600X, Ryzen X3D models, or Intel’s newer Core 5 processors if their pricing is competitive.
