I'm considering upgrading my Ryzen 7 5700X to a 5800X3D for about $300 CAD, and possibly replacing my RTX 3080 FTW 12GB with an RTX 5080. I recently bought an MSI OLED 2560×1440 monitor capable of 500Hz through DisplayPort 2.1, but my current system usually runs closer to 144–240Hz in most games. The monitor was partly a forward-looking purchase, so I'm trying to decide whether either upgrade is worthwhile now or whether I should keep the current hardware and save for a complete rebuild later. A Radeon RX 9070 XT is also an option because it costs considerably less than a 5080. I'm also planning to verify that my power supply has enough capacity for a newer graphics card.

At 1440p, the graphics card will usually matter much more than moving from a 5700X to a 5800X3D. The CPU upgrade probably isn’t worth $300 CAD unless you’re specifically hitting CPU limits in competitive games. A 5080 would be a stronger upgrade, but it’s expensive, so make sure the performance increase matches what you’re willing to spend. The RX 9070 XT may offer better value if it costs roughly half as much, though it won’t perform at the same level as the 5080.
Your RTX 3080 is still capable for 1440p, especially if you’re satisfied with 144–240Hz. A 500Hz panel doesn’t automatically mean you need hardware that can reach 500 FPS in every game. Since the CPU upgrade offers limited value and the GPU options are costly, holding onto the current system and saving for a full rebuild in a few years is a perfectly reasonable plan.
That makes sense. I’ll compare the actual prices and performance before deciding, and I’ll check whether my power supply can handle the upgrade. I tend to choose higher-wattage units, so it may already be around 1000W.
