I currently have an AORUS RTX 3080 Ti Master with 12GB of VRAM and mainly play games at 1440p with a high-refresh-rate monitor. I recently missed a used RX 7900 XTX listed for $575 and am considering looking for another one between $550 and $600, then selling my 3080 Ti to reduce the upgrade cost. Would the 7900 XTX provide a meaningful enough improvement to justify the switch, or would the performance difference be too small? I may also experiment with local AI workloads, where the card's 24GB of VRAM could be useful.

The main caveat is that the upgrade is less compelling in games where you rely heavily on upscaling, ray tracing, or other features that favor NVIDIA. Your 3080 Ti still has strong DLSS support, while the 7900 XTX relies on AMD’s FSR ecosystem. If most of your games already run comfortably within 12GB and you care about ray tracing or DLSS image quality, the difference may not feel as large as the raw raster numbers suggest.
At that price, I’d consider the 7900 XTX a strong buy if the card is in good condition and fits your case. It has plenty of performance for 1440p high refresh and can also handle 4K well with sensible settings. Just check the cooler size, power supply requirements, temperatures, and warranty before buying a used model.
For traditional rasterized gaming, it can be a worthwhile upgrade. The RX 7900 XTX is generally around 50–60% faster at 1440p, has 24GB of VRAM, and should be excellent for high-refresh gaming. If selling the 3080 Ti brings your actual upgrade cost down to roughly $250–$300, that is a fairly reasonable deal, especially if you also want the extra memory for AI experimentation.
AMD’s newer FSR versions have improved considerably, so the gap depends heavily on the specific game and settings. I’d compare the titles you actually play rather than assuming one upscaling solution will always look better.
