How Do AI Tools Affect JavaScript Technical Interviews?

I'm trying to understand how candidates have experienced AI assistance during technical interviews. I'm considering different tools, but I'm concerned about detection and whether they work during screen sharing or on platforms such as HackerRank, CoderPad, and CodeSignal. Have interviewers noticed AI assistance, and what kinds of monitoring or follow-up questions did they use? I'm based in the EU and speak English, where entry-level opportunities are limited, so I'm often applying for mid-level roles despite not having the usual junior-to-senior progression. I'd appreciate practical perspectives rather than a lecture about that situation.

Interview platforms may monitor tab changes, browser focus, clipboard activity, or other unusual input patterns, so browser extensions and shortcut-based tools can be detected. During screen sharing, the bigger issue is often human behavior: long unexplained pauses, looking away from the screen, suddenly producing a complete solution, or being unable to explain the code. AI can be useful for studying beforehand or remembering small syntax details, but relying on it to solve the whole problem usually falls apart when the interviewer asks you to modify the solution or justify the approach.

Be careful about aiming for a role that’s far beyond your current experience. Even if an AI tool helps you pass the initial coding task, the job itself can be stressful if you’re constantly trying to catch up. Mid-level and senior interviews usually test much more than whether the code passes: interviewers ask you to explain your reasoning, handle edge cases, change requirements, and discuss performance or design tradeoffs.

That’s fair. I understand the risk, but entry-level options are extremely limited where I am, so I may have to try for these roles while continuing to improve.

Language ability can also affect which jobs are available, but learning a new language takes time and doesn’t solve an immediate financial problem. In the meantime, it may be more useful to target roles whose requirements are close to your actual experience and be transparent about your strengths, rather than depending on a tool that could leave you unprepared once hired.
