Why does my LCP score vary so much, and how can I improve it?

I'm building my first website and have read that a low Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is important for user experience and search visibility. When I test the site with PageSpeed Insights, the result varies dramatically—sometimes around 2.5 seconds and other times as high as 22 seconds. Is this caused by the testing environment, my website, or both? The page also starts with an animation that reveals a list of words one at a time. Could that animation be delaying or making the LCP measurement unreliable?

PageSpeed’s lab tests simulate a slower phone and network, so results can vary between runs. Run the test several times and look at the overall pattern rather than trusting one result. If your site has inconsistent server response times, cold starts, or slow hosting, that can add even more variation. The field-data section, when available, reflects real visitors and is more representative than a single synthetic test.

A good compromise is to render the main headline or primary content fully visible in the initial HTML with normal opacity, so it can be counted immediately. Keep animations for smaller decorative elements or content below the fold, and avoid hiding the main LCP candidate with long fades or JavaScript-driven rendering. Also check your server’s time to first byte, font loading, image sizes, and render-blocking scripts, since those can delay the first meaningful content too.

The word-by-word animation is very likely contributing to the problem. If the largest text starts with `opacity: 0`, is inserted by JavaScript, or remains hidden while it animates, the browser may wait before recording it as the LCP element. On a throttled mobile test, a short animation can take much longer than expected. Check the LCP element in PageSpeed’s diagnostics or Chrome DevTools to confirm what is being measured.

So should I remove the animation completely, or is there a way to keep it without hurting LCP?
