Would upgrading from an i7-14700F to a 9800X3D be worthwhile for 1440p gaming and streaming?

I'm currently using an Intel Core i7-14700F with a Gigabyte B760M C V3 motherboard, an RTX 5070 Ti, and 32GB of DDR5 memory. I mainly play games at 1440p, while also streaming, editing, and recording. Would switching to a Ryzen 7 9800X3D or a newer Intel processor provide a noticeable improvement? I've watched several reviews, but I'm still not very familiar with how these CPUs compare in real-world use. In demanding games, my GPU is usually around 90% usage at high settings.

For your setup, an upgrade probably wouldn’t be worth the cost. At 1440p with a 5070 Ti, you’ll usually be GPU-limited in demanding games, so a faster CPU may only add a few frames. The 14700F is also a strong all-rounder with plenty of cores for streaming, recording, and editing. Keep it and make sure your motherboard has the latest BIOS and Intel microcode updates installed.

A 9800X3D would be faster in CPU-limited games, especially esports titles or games where high minimum FPS and reduced stuttering matter. However, it would require changing to an AM5 motherboard, and the gaming improvement at 1440p won’t usually justify replacing an already capable 14700F. You’d also give up some of the extra-core advantage that helps with editing and multitasking.

That makes sense. I was mainly wondering whether the smoother frame times would be obvious, but most of the games I play already seem limited by the GPU.

The 14700F is already close to the point of diminishing returns for 1440p gaming with that graphics card. You might see a noticeable difference in very high-refresh competitive games, but in graphically demanding AAA games the result will likely be small. Unless you’re unhappy with your current frame rates, save the money and upgrade later when the performance gap is much larger.

Newer Intel options could improve performance in some workloads, but moving from a 14700F would still be an expensive sidegrade unless you have a specific productivity workload that benefits from it. Even a 9800X3D is more of a targeted gaming upgrade than a clear improvement in every task. I’d only consider changing platforms if you’re consistently CPU-limited or planning a much faster graphics card later.
