Is Two Hours of Battery Life Normal After Three Years?

I have a Dell XPS 13 that's about three years old, and its battery now lasts only around two hours. The laptop has also been through a lot of daily use, including being carried in a backpack frequently, and the fans often run loudly even when I'm just browsing. I'm a college student without reliable access to outlets, so the short battery life is becoming a serious problem. I'm starting a graduate job next year and plan to buy a new laptop then, but I'd like realistic expectations for battery longevity. Ideally, I want something that can handle coding, multiple browser windows, and lightweight gaming for a couple of hours without needing a charger. Is this level of battery degradation normal, and would replacing the battery be worthwhile in the meantime?

Yes, two hours after roughly three years of heavy daily use isn’t especially surprising. Laptop batteries gradually lose capacity, and noticeable runtime reductions can begin after 18–24 months. Before replacing the whole laptop, check the battery’s actual health with Windows’ `powercfg /batteryreport` command. If the full-charge capacity has dropped significantly, replacing the battery could restore a lot of the original runtime.

A battery replacement is probably worth considering, especially since you still need the laptop for school. Background apps and the high fan usage may also be draining it faster, so check what’s running and whether the cooling system needs cleaning. If you replace the battery, use an OEM or reputable replacement rather than the cheapest option available. A local repair shop can install it, though many XPS 13 models are also reasonably straightforward to service yourself.

I was planning to wait until I get my first or second paycheck at my new job before buying a replacement laptop, but the battery is making it difficult to get homework done now. I’ll look into replacing it as a temporary fix.
