Should I remove a heavy dual-tower CPU cooler before driving my PC?

I need to transport a desktop with an MSI motherboard and a large dual-tower air cooler installed. The graphics card is secured to the case, but the CPU cooler is mounted directly to the motherboard and could put leverage on the socket area during bumps or sudden stops. Is it reasonably safe for a careful car journey, or should I remove the cooler first?

The safest option is to remove both the graphics card and the heavy tower cooler. It only takes a few minutes, and replacing the cooler’s thermal paste is much cheaper than risking a bent board or damaged socket.

For a normal, careful drive, it will probably be fine, especially if the case is laid on its side and secured so it cannot slide around. Avoid placing it where the cooler’s weight can flex the motherboard during bumps.

A short trip in your own car is much less risky than shipping the computer, but a heavy dual-tower cooler can still act like a lever on the motherboard. If the roads are rough or the cooler is especially large, removing it is cheap insurance.

If you leave it installed, lay the case flat, cushion it, and secure it against sliding or tipping. When removing the cooler, twist it gently to break the thermal-paste seal rather than pulling straight up, since the CPU can sometimes stick to the cooler.
